The mountain was named in 1892 by Canadian geologist Arthur Philemon Coleman|Arthur Coleman after his brother, Lucius Quincy Coleman (1854–1935), who ranched in the Bow Valley and outfitted Arthur's 1892 and 1893 expeditions into the mountains. The first ascent of the summit was made in 1927 by Alfred Ostheimer along with guide汉斯·富勒。

Based on the Köppen climate classification, Mount Quincy is located in a subarctic climate zone with cold, snowy winters, and mild summers.

The mountain is composed of sedimentary rock laid down during the Precambrian to Jurassic periods and pushed east and over the top of younger rock during the Laramide orogeny.
